April 17th - Chicago, Illinois to Erie, Pennsylvania

This morning we were treated to the marvellous sight of the sunrise over lake Michigan with the lights of Chicago in the foreground. What a way to remember Chicago!

Our three night stay in Chicago is over. We are all really sorry to be leaving this fabulous city. Everyone agreed that our next visit must be for a much longer period than just three days.

Today's drive is one of the longest of the trip, over 450 miles across four states, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The drive out of Chicago along Lakeshore Drive is a wonderful way to leave the city. We passed the Chicago Bear's (American football) stadium, Soldier Field. It was recently increased in size and the addition has been described as a 'padded toilet seat'! Not long after we crossed into Indiana and then Ohio. We were now in Eastern Standard Time, five hours behind BST. It was a long slog across flat open agricultural land.

We passed round the two big cities on the route, Toledo and Cleveland before entering into Pennsylvania.

The Cleveland skyline with with Bob and Thelma 'leading the way'.

We were now just south of Lake Erie, heading for our motel on the shores of the lake just east of Erie City. We arrived at about 5pm, having driven for nearly 7 hours. The motel was on an escarpment above the lake, which looks like an ocean!

These Great Lakes are really vast, quite unlike anything we have in the UK, or Europe. Tomorrow we drive to the Niagara Falls, in New York State.
